The ministry of social justice and empowerment has proposed to set up a total of 150 co-educational residential schools for students belonging to scheduled castes (SCs) on the lines of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, the government told Lok Sabha on Monday.

The ministry has proposed to set up Ambedkar Navodaya Vidayalayas in the districts having “large concentration” of SC population.

As proposed by the ministry, these schools to be established under a new scheme will enroll students from class VI and provide education upto class XII.

“The scheme aims to nurture and promote the talent of the meritorious students belonging to scheduled castes by providing best opportunities and resources to boost overall improvement of their life and to compete with the other students for higher education leading to better choice of profession and better employment opportunities to them,” HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank told the Lok Sabha while replying to a written question.

However, the social justice and empowerment ministry’s proposal to establish Ambedkar Navodaya Vidayalayas is yet to get approval of the government, the Human Resource Development (HRD) minister clarified.

According to official sources, the social justice and empowerment ministry is giving a final shape to the proposal which has been discussed recently at a meeting of the sectoral group of secretaries chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
